Address Enrichment
In many cases, insights from Glimpse Tier 1 are desired but the Tier 1 required attributes are not available. In these cases, the address enrichment service is available. This service, built by the Virtual Energy Efficiency team, requires an address and uses various sources of public data to search county records and survey data to find the best information available on the building’s function, age, last renovation, primary heating fuel, and square footage.
The Process
The process is as follows:
- Geocode. Using the Google Geocoding API with the given address, get the latitude and longitude from the address.
- Find County Code. Using Census Geocoding API with the given address to get the county FIPS code and county name.

- Convert stored values to VEE Data Definitions. In some cases, values need to be converted to the VEE Data Definition in order for downstream processes to understand them.
- Calculate square footage and data quality scores. Use the available square footage, footprint square footage, story count, building height, source counts, and crosswalk scores to calculate the returned square footage and data quality scores.
Square Footage Calculations
- If both Story Count and Footprint Square Footage exist, they are multiplied to get Square Footage.
- If both Building Height and Footprint Square Footage exist, Building Height is converted to Story Count using an average 15 square feet per floor, and the result is multiplied with Footprint Square Footage to get Square Footage.
Data Quality Score
Depending on the quantity of records in the county database for each Tier 1 attribute, the confidence in the data definition crosswalks used, and the values returned, the returned values will have a different data quality score (also understood as a confidence interval).
Year Built
- 2 Sources → Quality = 1
- 1 Source of Year Built → Quality = 0.5
- 1 Source of Surrounding Structures Year Built → Quality = 0.25
Square Footage
Calculation Note: to count multiple sources together, they must be within 20% of the highest (ie. two sources saying 100,000 and 79,000 would not count together, but two sources saying 100,000 and 81,000 would. In both cases, the value from the source deemed the highest quality would be used.)
- 3 or more sources of Square Footage → Quality = 1
- 2 sources of Square Footage → Quality = 0.66
- 1 source of Square Footage → Quality = 0.33
- Footprint Square Footage and either Story Count or Building Height → Quality = 0.2
Building Type
Calculation Note: to count routes together, they must have mapped via crosswalk to the same type. Quality score is also impacted by the qualitative strength of the crosswalk match.

Calculating Final Quality
Crosswalk-scores are given for each crosswalk mapping (1-4). These are assigned qualitatively based on how good of a match the building’s energy consuming processes are deemed to be. The mean of these scores for all the sources used is taken to be the Mean Crosswalk Score .
Quality = Quality Multiplier * Mean Crosswalk Score
In some cases, the building type stored by the county is deemed “Not a Building” (ex. “Farm”) or “Industrial”. In these cases, we return “Warehouse” and overwrite the Quality score to 0.2.
Data Mappings
Address enrichment can return several source-specific building-use and heating fields. When one of these fields is available, the service crosswalks the stored value to the closest VEE Data Definition. The mapping tables below are separated by source field: LCBS Function, LCBS Activity, Property Use, Amenity, HVAC Heating Detail, and HVAC Heating Fuel.
